ISBT 128 creates a new section for tissue products where the bone is the primary component
The International Tissue Technical Advisory Group (ITTAG) has revised the ISBT 128 Tissues Terminology and created the new section “Bone/Soft Tissue Bounded List and Definitions” for tissue products where the bone is the primary component.
This revision was necessary to address concerns with tissue products that contain combinations of bone and soft tissue, and are currently labelled using a Class Name that begins with the word “TENDON” even though the bone is the primary component (e.g., entire tibia attached to the patellar tendon).
The Technical Bulletin “Revised Tissues Terminology: Products That Contain Bone and Soft Tissue Combinations” – available at the ISBT128 webpage - addresses all the changes made to the terminology and Product Description Codes. It is expected that these changes will benefit to both labellers and end-users. Please note that the revised terminology will be implemented in version 7.35 of the “Standard Terminology for Medical Products of Human Origin” to be released on April 1, 2020.
